Knee

The knee is a modified hinge joint. It consists of three compartments: the patellofemoral articulation, consisting of the patella (kneecap) and the patellar groove on the front of the femur (thigh bone) through which it slides; and the medial and lateral tibiofemoral articulations connecting the femur with the tibia (shin bone), the main bone of the lower leg. The joint is bathed in synovial fluid, a lubricating substance, which is contained inside the synovial membrane called the joint capsule.

The knee is the largest joint in the human body. It plays an essential role in movement related to carrying the body weight in horizontal (running and walking) and vertical (jumping) directions.

Pain in the knee may be due to a variety of reasons including pain coming from the joint itself of referred pain from surrounding structures (ligaments, tendons, muscle, nerves, cartilage, other joint involvement.) Pain may also be related to inflammation, physical trauma, and/or general wear and tear. Our office can perform evaluations to determine the cause of discomfort and provide the appropriate treatment.
