Rehabilitation medicine, also known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) or physiatry, aims to improve and restore function to improve quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Unlike other medical specialties that may focus more on a medical “cure,” the goals of treatment are to maximize patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life. We treat infants, children, and adults and will collaborate care with other specialists and allied health therapists (physical, occupation, and speech) to manage issues. We take a team-based approach. See many of our treatment options below. Several of these can be alternatives to surgery if the condition doesn't require it.
