Botox

What is Botox?

Botulinum toxin (or Botox®) injection is an FDA-approved treatment that can be used to reduce the increased tone or muscle activity that results from spasticity and other conditions.

It can also be used to treat chronic migraine headaches. Botulinum toxin is a protein that prevents muscles from contracting.

It is derived from the same bacterium that causes “botulism” from food poisoning. However, the dose given in a botulinum toxin injection is much lower and is not harmful.

Possible side effects of the injection include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Soreness
  • A red rash that lasts several days after the injection

Proper injection of botulinum toxin is performed by one of our experienced providers using EMG guidance and possibly an ultrasound to ensure correct placement.

The effects of a botulinum toxin injection are temporary, usually lasting three months.
