Concussions

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by a blow to the head or when the body is impacted to cause the head to be violently shaken. While not exclusive to sports such as football, hockey, and soccer, concussions are common injuries in these games.

When sustained, a concussion will alter the functioning of your brain. The effects vary from case to case but often include headaches, difficulty with concentration, dizziness, or issues with coordination or balance.

Concussions are usually temporary and with proper management, most individuals make a full recovery. They definitely deserve evaluation and treatment by a skilled medical professional, and early diagnosis and management are extremely important. We treat both adults and children with concussions and coordinate care with physical therapists skilled in treating concussions.

Our Treatment Options:

  • Neurocognitive testing
  • Physical and/or speech therapy
  • Progressive management of return to play
  • Medications (particularly to help with sleep problems that may be associated with a concussion. These usually last only for a short period of time.)
