Cerebral Palsy
What is Cerebral Palsy?
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the leading cause of disability in young children. CP is a developmental disorder of movement, muscle tone and/or posture. It is caused by damage to the young, developing brain usually before or during birth. The way CP presents itself can be very unique to each individual depending on the extent of injury to the brain, and so functional abilities can vary greatly from person to person.

Signs and symptoms usually appear during the first years of life and can include some combination of:
- Being “too stiff” or “too floppy”
- Lack of muscle coordination or weakness
- Involuntary muscle movements or tremors
- Delays in reaching motor milestones
Abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteady walking, or some combination of these are also symptoms of CP.
