Good Eating Ain't Easy These Days

eating healthyI let my patients know that maintaining a decent weight, remaining active and healthy is an uphill battle. It does not mean that it can't be done (there are plenty of inspirational examples out there of people radically changing their habits and converting an unhealthy lifestyle into a dynamic and healthy one) but our current society does not make things very easy. Here is why: http://www.vox.com/2016/8/31/12368246/charts-explain-obesity

Here are 3 ideas on how to be your best and healthiest self in a world that makes it challenging:

  1. Eat mostly whole foods, fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean meats. Yes, this is an old refrain and nothing earth-shattering, but most food choices available these days are geared towards incredibly calorically-dense, high sugar foods that pack in a huge amount of sugar, fat and calories even when eaten in very small portions.
  2. Move your body daily. Enough said. We can't sit driving to work, sit all day at work, sit driving home and then sit watching tv at night and expect our bodies to feel good.
  3. Surround yourself with people who support your health. The 5 people you are closest to will have the most impact on your health, well-being and general quality of life. Make efforts to seek out people who are living a healthy and energetic life that you admire.

Keep moving!
